Kundalini yoga is a kind of transportation system. Simply put, it takes you from your current place and puts you in a better place, a better reality. It is a technology that awakens your dormant potential and gives you the experience of your vastness!
One of the keys in Kundalini Yoga, which unlocks this potential, is the creative use of sound. These sounds come in the form of Mantras (a word or words which are repeated over and over). Most of us have heard the term “Mantra,” but what does this ancient Sanskrit word mean?
Mantra: “man” means mind, and “tra” means wavelength. In other words, through the applied repetition of Mantra, you can direct how the mind thinks. Mantra creates a rhythmic movement in your favor. It has the power to move and expand your energetic field. When your energy is moving in a positive and productive direction, positive and productive things will be attracted to you. It’s that simple!
“One story I read when I was a child told about a beautiful princess who was held prisoner in a tower. She gained her freedom by guessing the name of her captor. It was “Rumpelstiltskin,” in case you’ve forgotten. Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves found the treasure cave by saying the magic words, “Open Sesame,” whereupon a hidden door miraculously appeared. These words were, in effect Mantras. It’s no fairy tale, it’s a fact—when you know the “magic” words, you can find the hidden treasure!” -Shakti Parwha Kaur
The power of Mantra lies in the sound vibration. Sages throughout time, discovered threads of sound that vibrated at the higher frequencies. They found that every element within us and around us has a frequency that manifests itself as sound and energy. Rocks carry slow, low-frequency vibrations. Music carries etheric, high-frequency vibrations. Even our thoughts carry frequency vibrations that move throughout and around us. Happiness carries a specific vibration, just as sorrow and anger have their frequencies.
Mantras carry vibrations that have an exact and predictable effect on your psyche. When you chant a mantra, the constant repetition of the sound vibration begins to alter your brain chemistry, and in turn, literally re-patterns the way you think.
“A person can tune his or her consciousness into the awareness of that totality with the use of a mantra. By vibrating in rhythm with the breath to a particular sound that is proportional to the creative sound, or sound current, one can expand one’s sensitivity to the entire spectrum of vibration. It is similar to striking a note on a stringed instrument. In other words, as you vibrate, the universe vibrates with you.” – Yogi Bhajan
So how does this work? It begins at the roof of the mouth, which contains 84 meridian points. When you chant a specific mantra, the movement of the tongue and pressure from your breath stimulates these meridian points. These points signal the endocrine system to send signals throughout the body to create a condition relative to the vibration of the Mantra.
Your nervous system then becomes synchronized, and your flow of thoughts comes into alignment with your Truth. In religious terms, this Truth is referred to as our Higher Self, our Divine Self, our Soul, even God.
The more Mantra meditation you do, the more the vibratory patterns of the Mantra will establish themselves in your body and psyche. The body system tends to resonate sympathetically with the Mantra, and this vibrational pattern resonates within all parts of you. In other words, after a time, these frequencies will begin vibrating on their own.
This new vibration resonates at such a deep level that you can step outside of the constraints of your ego and begin to realize your true vastness. Kundalini Yoga is called the Yoga of Awareness for this reason. You manifest your reality with every word you speak and every thought you create. Simply put, we become what we vibrate.
The vastness you feel with this connection helps to keep life in perspective. You begin attracting situations, people, and things that support your Higher Self. Life becomes clearer, simpler, and more manageable. You have created a space where you can feel, hear, and act on the call of your Soul.
This technology is available to you at any moment of the day – whether you are sitting at your desk, walking to your car, or having a not so pleasant conversation with a family member. Just chant a mantra to yourself, and your attitude regarding that situation will begin to change.
“What you vibrate, you become.” – Yogi Bhajan
Mantras are practiced and chanted in every Kundalini Yoga class at Guru Gayatri. Kundalini Yoga gives us practical technology to align our bodies and minds with our Soul’s purpose and to experience happiness, which is our birthright.
So let’s connect, vibrate, and experience our Infinity together. Sat Nam.
